Katie Atkins, INWA Nordic Walking Instructor has 26 years teaching as a primary teacher with 12 years as a PE specialist (working with mainstream, gifted and talented and SEND pupils)

Nordic4Kids walking courses for Children and Teens provide a chance to learn a new activity whilst having fun in the fresh air all year round. Suitable for all, nordic walking provides a break from technology works upper and lower body muscles, increases balance, coordination, core strength and fine and gross motor skills.

Nordic4Schools

For Year 3 - Year 6

Available on your school site in curriculum time or as an After School Club. Sessions tailored to individual needs.
Having the opportunity to enthuse our children in a fun and easily accessible sport is something we have looked to do for years. Nordic4Kids is exactly what we had been looking for! In addition Nordic4Kids has provided our children with an excellent level of pastoral care, helping them to grow as individuals as well as active sports people. Stoke Bishop Primary School

Suitable for all: Nordic4Kids teaches children (Y3-Y6)

  • How to Nordic walk, run, skip and jump using all these skills in a fun and varied programme.
  • Engages pupils making the most of being outside in the fresh air!
  • Works upper and lower body muscles, increasing balance, co-ordination, core strength and helps develop fine and gross motor skills.
*Walking poles are provided for all lessons.
*You will just need your PE kit and trainers that can get muddy!

  • Max 15 children per class
  • 1 or 2 Instructors (Depending on children’s needs)
  • Technique based Autumn / Winter / Spring / Summer courses in school grounds or off site on a site agreed to with school.

Y3- Y6 – all abilities *to include Nordic Nurture (OT/ Pupil Premium/ SEND/ low self esteem or fitness pupils)
  • Understand how your body moves
  • Nordic technique
  • Learn to walk, run, skip and jump with your poles
  • Pole games, Nordic races and obstacle courses
  • Warm up/ cool down stretches
Nordic Nurture
  • Exercises focused on developing balance and co-ordination
  • Crossing the mid line
  • Hand strength for fine motor skills
  • Poles are provided
  • School PE Kit and trainers
  • Hi Vis vests provided
  • Head torches provided as the evenings draw in

Nordic4Teens

For Year 7 - Year 13

Also available on your school site in curriculum time or as an After School Club. Sessions tailored to individual needs.

Re energise with Nordic4Teens and explore The Downs, Blaise Castle Estate, Ashton Court, Leigh Woods and all their terrain, slopes and gullies. Make new friends, enjoy learning the technique of Nordic Walking and increase your fitness too.

Nordic4Teens also provides fitness preparation, within the sessions for D of E (Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme). Learn to use the poles to aid your walking when carrying heavy backpacks on the flat, up and down hills.

With poles you feel more stable and can keep going. They keep your back in the right position. No back ache! Annabel

We can provide sessions tailored to your children’s individual needs be it in assembly time, PE (OAA Programme) or After School. This can be linked into your OAA provision or part of a PHSE Well Being Programme.

Y7- Y13

  • All sessions are for Y7- Y13 and cater to individual needs with a focus on technique, walking on the flat, uneven terrain and up and down hills. Some Teens walk for an hour and some for two hours.
  • All sessions focus on the Nature around us, enjoying the chance to observe the seasons and changing landscape throughout the year.
  • D of E fitness preparation with backpacks is incorporated into all sessions for those training for D of E, with walkers increasing their backpack weights steadily over time and walking for up to two hours. Younger walkers or those not in training for D of E carry a small rucksack for a drink and snack.
  • Start to advanced Nordic walking technique
  • How to increase fitness and understand your body in exercise
  • Routes and wildlife of the varied terrain in Ashton Court, Blaise Castle Estate, Downs and Leigh Woods
  • Build up to Fitness for DOE or 5km challenge and learn technique to aid you

Nordic4Kids Out & About Club

For Year 3 - Year 6

Spring & Summer Seasons
Thursday 4:15 - 5:30pm

Explore the open space of The Downs and appreciate nature whilst learning how to Nordic Walk.

Identify the trees, birds, butterflies and wild flowers and use binoculars and magnifying glasses to get up close to nature.

Exploring the Downs. Meet up and collection from Redmaids' High Junior School, Bristol (map) (open to pupils from all schools)
  • Year 3 - Year 6 (open to pupils from all schools)
  • Mixed group
  • Terms 4, 5, 6
  • Nordic walking technique.
  • Identify the trees, birds, butterflies and wild flowers.
  • Use binoculars to get up close to nature.
  • Poles provided
  • Long loose trousers or joggers, walking boots or trainers, long sleeved top and cagoule.
  • Binoculars provided

£6 per session, payable in 4 week block.

Nordic Nurture

Classes for children receiving Occupational Therapy (OT) or children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Class sizes for up to 6 children with two instructors.

Saturdays (Term time only) 12.30-1.30pm

Mixed age group (Y4 up)

£10 per session. Blocks of 5 weeks.
